Art for Orphanages

We’ve started sending teams to local orphanages where they teach sculpture. Beyond just giving the children a lovely day, the teams use art as a positive outlet for the stress that many children, especially in orphanages, still feel even more than one year after the earthquake.

Project Status:

Complete - Exhibitions On-going

Goals:

  • Give children a positive outlet for stress by teaching them art

Outcomes:

Full Description:

For children in orphanages, the earthquake continues to affect their day to day life. Many of the kids are only in orphanages because of the the earthquake killed their parents or left their family without means to care for them.

Even for children who did not lose a parent, the trauma of the day continues to manifest itself in nightmares, frustration, and on-going fear.

Our art for orphanages project aims to give children a positive outlet for stress. The children are led by one of EDV’s Haitian staff members who is also a trained artist, Evans.

Supported by international volunteers, Evans visits the orphanage twice a week, giving a different lesson each time. At the end of three months, all the children who have been participating in the project will display what they’ve made at an exhibition at the orphanage.

Their art will be for sale, hopefully also providing the orphanage with some much needed income.

Support this project:

We hope to expand this project to other orphanages in the area, but we’ll need more funding to support art at more orphanages! We need funding to buy more clay, paint, and smocks. Please give what you can.
