Vietnam Assessment January 2010

17/2/10 Update!

EDV's assessment team arrived in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam on February 9th, 2010. During our first week on the ground we've set up meetings with government officials, identified possible Vietnamese partners, contacted NGOs working in the area, and are looking forward to meeting with survivors in disaster affected communities in the coming two weeks.

Assessment Announcement

In September and October of 2009, a series of typhoons swept through Asia. Typhoon Ketsana struck the central coast of Vietnam on 29th September, damaging, destroying, or flooding more than 396,000 houses. In Quang Nam province alone, more than 15,000 houses collapsed and 155,000 houses suffered roof damage from the storm.

Ketsana was followed by Typhoon Mirinae, which hit nine provinces in the centre of Vietnam on November 2 and claimed the lives of 123 Vietnamese. The storm also stranded thousands more, and damaged nearly 50,000 houses. More than 2,000 of those have collapsed.

Vietnam is frequently hit by typhoons, highlighting the need for sustainable recovery that will leave disaster affected communities less vulnerable to future storms.

Our assessment will be a fact-finding mission where we’ll gather information on what living conditions are like in Vietnam, the needs of the disaster affected communities, and where the damage is centered. We’ll use that information to decide whether or not an EDV deployment in Vietnam would be appropriate.

Keep up with Assessment Developments

We’ll be tweeting from the disaster (EDVMedia) as well as posting information on our Facebook page. Regular updates will also be posted in this section and be included in our newsletters. If you aren’t currently receiving the newsletter and you'd like to start, just email us at: Media@europeandisastervolunteers.org.
