Changing the lives of survivors and volunteers worldwide
Week 5: Bamboo Workshop
Our first few weeks with the students focused on trainings, but this week was a little different. Working with Kleiwerks international and GrassRoots United, the students engaged in a creative bamboo workshop.
The workshop started with a presentation about the uses and properties of bamboo. The students then worked with international volunteers to design and build a structure. This creative, participatory process not only gave students a chance to design a small structure from the ground up, but to engage in a positive, group activity.
These kinds of creative events don’t provide “hard” skills, but they to give an opportunity for much needed mental relief from the constant stress of living in a disaster affected community and provide young people with confidence in their abilities.
