We’re in the final stages of organising a community library in our local community. Stocked with just over 100 books, this will be the first public library the community has ever had.
After spending time with the students in our student group and speaking to young people in the area, it became clear that there were many in our community who wanted to further their education but couldn’t. When asked if they would like a library to help with this problem, all responded with an enthusiastic yes. In response we’re now in the process of creating a small public library here in our community.
The library will be housed in a local church. The church staff will take responsibility for issuing library cards and looking after the books. The students in our student group will also be responsible for looking after the books and making sure that the library is running smoothly.
While EDV and our partners here, GrassRoots United, have provided the wood for shelving and a private donor has provided the books, the community has articulated how they’d like the library to run and has taken responsibility for its growth. This is a classic example of how international groups can facilitate a community initiative.
A big thanks to the private donor who donated the books and to GrassRoots United (GRU) who connected the dots and got the books to the library. Read more about GRU here.
We are always looking for book donations to help the library grow. Contact us to find out more.
