Melissa's Hope Orphanage Drainage

During our first month on the ground in Haiti we got out feet wet running this project which aimed to reduce the effects of severe flooding at an orphanage for disabled children.

Melissa's Hope cares for eighteen children, thirteen of whom are disabled. The wall surrounding the orphanage was destroyed by the earthquake, leaving the property open to flooding.

The source of the flooding was a small drainage ditch in the road behind the orphanage which was filled with rubble during the earthquake causing it to overflow and onto the orphanage’s property.

Working with GrassRoots United, we engaged Haitian and international volunteers to remove rubble from the drainage ditch and place over 100 sand bags to patch the damaged wall. We also filled 100 additional sand bags for the orphanage’s staff to place as needed.
